I’ve been playing around with a couple of new ideas for our videos and realized we’re not taking full advantage of our transcriptions. If you don’t already know, we have transcriptions of all our videos (free and premium). You can see them by clicking the “Click Here To Read The Transcript” link at the bottom of each video.
By the way, our transcriptions are completed by Glory J. – a transcriber I found on Elance.com. Since I’m such a mediocre typist, I struggled with transcribing since it took so much of my time. I finally realized I needed to outsource this task or it would never get done!
Our videos are hosted on YouTube and they have a option to upload a transcript so that viewers can read along while watching the video. This is obviously very helpful to the deaf or hard of hearing. My past experience with these automated systems is the syncing of the transcription to the video is WAY off and not useable. However, YouTube has dramatically improved this feature. I uploaded the transcript for our Top 5 Quilting Tools video and the result is amazing!

Here it is – Block #4 of the Patriotic Block of the Month!
This block has 2 units – a half square triangle unit and a quarter square triangle unit. I like using my quick quarter and a small Hera Marker to mark my lines, this way I don’t have to figure out what marking color will show up on my fabric.

Tools make quilting easier. Just the other day I talked with a lady who uses her husband’s woodworking T for cutting her projects! She also had a nasty cut on her hand. She left the shop with a Creative Grid 6 1/2″x 24 1/2″ ruler and a smile on her face.
Sure, there are lots of name brands out there, some more expensive than others.
Hello, my name is Aimee Griffin, from overallquilter.com. And I’m currently working at the Quilter’s Loft in Morrisville, North Carolina and what I find when customers come in … and they are self-taught quilters … they are not using the correct tools. So today’s video, I want to show you my top five tools for quilting.
The top five tools that I think you absolutely have to have is a self-healing mat, and I prefer the Olfa. I know that there are a lot of different types of mats. Some are more plasticy. These are self-healing and I find that I can read them easier, and they work for me.
The other two rulers; you have the 12½, and I highly recommend a square ruler. And the 12½, I just like because if you’re squaring down blocks, you have up to 12½ inches to square down.
And the other one is the 6½ x 24½. And my preferred rulers are the Creative Grid rulers. They do have nice grippy and they are very easy to read.
A nice rotary cutter that fits well in your hand. There are three, four different sizes, and I find the 45mm is what works best for me.
Pins. Pins are really important because the thinner they are, the flatter your seams are going to fit. You want them to be glass head. In case they’re left and you go to press, you don’t want any of the plastic heads to melt into your fabric.
So those are the top five.
And I do have a sixth tool, and that is thread. And I want to show you my preferred; my preferred thread is the Aurifil. It’s very nice and thin. You don’t see any hairs. And that is very important to have very thin thread when you’re sewing, so that your seams lay nice and flat.

Block #3 has 2 sub units. Sub units are the parts of the block that make the blocks. Sometimes I repeat one unit to make the entire block. This time the block has two units that repeat four times each, plus a center square.
My center square is fabric with the ‘Pledge of Allegiance’ written on it. You can use any special fabrics you might have or use your background fabric.
Do you have left over bits and pieces of batting sitting around the room? Did you know that batting can be pieced? With the price of cotton going up I find myself looking at these pieces differently. Where before I threw them away, now the larger pieces get set aside to be pieced for smaller projects. This batting video shows you how to piece batting together.
